A turn for the mystical

Are you sitting down? Good, because there’s been a change to the challenge list. Calm down, everything will be fine.

After some discussion around health-related practicalities, the lovely Claire changed her challenge (formerly, Walk from London-Brighton) to:

Get a Tarot Reading

I am definitely in the cynical camp when it comes to these kinds of things. In fact, cards on the table (ho ho), I think it’s a load of bullshit. Nevertheless, on a chilly winter afternoon and bolstered by a couple of glasses of Glühwein from the Manchester Christmas Market, Claire, Jenny and I went in search of a tarot reader at Affleck’s Palace. We eventually found said Mystic (who was incidentally the most Manc woman you’ve ever met, I don’t know why I found that so surprising) and sat down for individual readings.

And… it was really interesting. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think she tapped into any supernatural sources, but she gave some damn good advice and no matter what you believe, someone saying “you have all the tools you need to succeed, but you need to keep pushing yourself to do better” – whether they’re a psychic or your best friend – is quite good to hear. As much as I hate to say it, because yes I KNOW it’s all a trick and I KNOW body language and facial expressions are really easy to read and I KNOW you only remember the stuff that hits a chord… when we all compared readings afterward there were some oddly specific things which seemed pertinent to each of us… make of that what you will.

Anyway, I found it all quite fascinating. It’s the kind of experience that gives you a tiny bit of space and time to interrogate whether you’re on the path you imagined for yourself. I’d do it again just for that.
